Another interesting question that my lecturer raised in class today. Though I think I've already blogged about this sometime back. Still, no harm blogging about it again.
Often times people say things like "I am who I am". That's great and indeed it is. BUT!
What is/was it that made you YOU?
Was it family influences? Friends? Girlfriend? Religion? Experiences?
My answer to this in class was - life.
Why?
Well, everything is encompassed under life. In life you have your family, friends, religion, experiences, etc. So, why does it only have to be ONE specific influence? How about strangers you meet in shopping malls? How about the person who smiles at you when you are feeling down but you don't even know who that is?
I'm a rebel at home. Quite a harsh word to use, I know but I admit to that. Why? Because I think I have an innate sense of very strong integrity in me.
Ever since I was very young, if I knew or felt that what I was doing wasn't wrong, then no matter how my parents or teachers for that matter reprimand me, I wouldn't listen. In fact, I didn't even care. I knew I wasn't at fault so I didn't deserve the lecture I got.
Even to this day, I stand strong when I feel that I did nothing wrong. If it was in my fault, then I will gladly admit it but not when I didn't do anything wrong.
So the question is this - What made you, you?

+From the day we're born. We are mold into someone others want us to be. That is until the stage where we develop our own mindset. As what you said, we rebel. Which mostly happens during our teenage years.
ReplyDelete+Well, it isn't a bad thing if you're deciding for yourself who you are.
+I just don't quite grasp the concept of the society trying 2 insert some kind of perception into the majority. As in how beauty should look like, and what ugly is like.
+If we tell a child she's ugly even when she is. She'll grow up believing she is. Vise versa.
+Not evryone is an ugly duckling, not evryone is a swan. It's up 2 us to build ourself up. Our personality. To change and willing to be changed.
+For better or worse. Stay true to urself. Then we'll nvr lost our way. =)
+Ahem, even when she is not.*
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
ReplyDeleteBut the thing is this; to stay true to ourselves, who are we really? Do you know who you really are? If you do, how did you become like that?
+Haha, that's a question that has no answer. Life is about searching for answers. But it doesn't mean we'll get the right answer. Heh well. Just be whoever makes u happy is my answer. ^^
ReplyDeleteHaha...again, that's true.
ReplyDeleteWhat if one doesn't want to be happy? What if a person decides to be miserable and sad?
I dont think anyone wants to be miserable and sad. Who is "happy" being sad? Probably if you asked anyone, do like feeling sad? and i dont think anyone would say YES, I LOVE FEELING SAD. IT'S SO AWESOME. I WANNA FEEL SAD FOREVER. that's honestly, BULL.
ReplyDeleteI guess we already know who we really are.. but sometimes we just refuse to admit it or acknowledge it. Maybe we don't know HOW to. That's where LIFE comes in, your family, friends, bla bla bla tell you about yourself.. to accept it, is prolly another question. :)
+As long as ur comfortable in ur skin la.=P
ReplyDeleteClaire;
ReplyDeleteHahaha...as usual. A very strong argument. =)
I'll accept it.
Penthius;
=.=...if not? How to change skin??
wow, a philosophy of life isn't it...
ReplyDeleteWell, i do agree with Dav, it's life that reflects who are we. I mean, what are you today is what you do today. What you said, what lifestyle you're living, but, it is not fixed that you are what you are today, you can be different tomorrow, life changes though.
Hahaha...Jason has stated the answer that is most appropriate.
ReplyDeleteLife changes everyday, and that changes us. We are never really the same everyday.
hey dude.. I am who I am. The GREAT I AM. i think only one could use this would be GOD. cos he never changes.
ReplyDeletebut what had made me until this day would be how I am miraculously shaped to who i am today - my journeys in life. The roads I had taken whether it is good or bad but it still had shaped me. So definitely I am never the same as how I am in the past but for sure a good and improved version of CAROLINE LEE, shaped nicely by the Big Man. :D
