Many factors I guess. Our personality, our family background, our past experiences. So we make decisions based on prior knowledge, which is influenced by such factors. :)
Why is more of, for the rewards, or fame or something like that.
Many times we do something thinking that we are doing it just because we want to and not wanting something in return. But when we look back, most of the time, there is a hidden agenda to it.

For ourselves. Humans are selfish by nature. We do things that are to OUR advantage.
