There is a saying;
The only person you need to beat is yourself.
Very commonly, we set a target that we need to achieve and most of the time, the target is someone else.
In school, it's sometime a friend in class. Trying to see who scores higher in exams.
At home, it could be siblings. Trying to outdo each other in getting good results in studies.
At work, it's a colleague. Fighting to get a promotion or something else.
In being a musician. We aim to be better or at the same level as someone famous.
In writing. We aim to be as good as William Shakespeare or someone really good.
However, little do we realize...it's not these people who we need to beat. It's them who we need to be better of to achieve something.
It's us that we need to overcome.
All these people who have become really good at what they do. Unbeatable in a sense. And yet they keep getting better day after day. Why is that? Do they have someone that they look up to as well?
Nope.
They train / practice everyday just so they can be better at what they do than they are at present time.
By putting an aim towards someone or something, you still need to become better than you are now before you can achieve what you aim at.
In the end, it all comes back to you.
Be better than yourself, not others. The aim is not others but YOU!
but sometimes trying to beat someone is a form or encouragement or maybe a strive for ourselves to do better. maybe we want to beat them so that we can beat ourselves..
ReplyDeleteWhy can't that someone be yourself? The hardest person to overcome is yourself.
ReplyDeleteTry motivating yourself to do something just so you could be better than yourself. Then try motivating yourself to do something because you wanna beat someone.
Which is easier and which is harder?
Of course, what you say has truth in it as well....=)
ReplyDeletethat someone IS ourselves. we're just using an image or a "symbol" to overcome ourselves. using OTHER people as an excuse to beat ourselves.
ReplyDelete:)
Sooooo, isn't it better to just say beat ourselves?? Lol...
